Spider veins and varicose veins are often mentioned together, but they are not quite the same thing.

Spider veins

Spider veins are small, thin veins close to the surface of the skin. They often look like red, blue, or purple webs, most commonly on the legs or face. For many people they are mainly a cosmetic concern.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are larger and may look twisted or raised. Some people have no symptoms, while others notice aching, heaviness, or swelling in their legs.

Why do they happen?

Veins contain small valves that keep blood moving towards the heart. When these valves weaken, blood can collect and the vein can widen. Common contributing factors include:

  • Family history
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Long periods of standing or sitting

How can they be treated?

Cosmetic sclerotherapy is one option. A solution is injected into the vein, causing it to close so that blood flows through healthy veins instead.

When to get medical advice

Book a check if your veins are painful or are affecting your daily life. Seek urgent medical care if a leg becomes suddenly swollen, hot, or painful, or if a vein bleeds and will not stop.
