Platelet-rich plasma, usually shortened to PRP, is a treatment made from your own blood. You may have heard about it for joint pain or thinning hair. Here is what it actually involves.
What is in PRP?
Blood is made up of red cells, white cells, platelets, and a liquid called plasma. Platelets are best known for helping blood clot, but they also carry proteins called growth factors, which play a part in the body’s repair process.
PRP is plasma that contains a higher concentration of platelets than normal blood.
How is it prepared?
- A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm.
- The sample is spun in a centrifuge, which separates its parts.
- The platelet-rich portion is collected and prepared for treatment.
Because it comes from your own body, there are no donor blood products involved.
What is it used for?
At Araya, we offer PRP for joint pain, hair restoration, and wound care.
Research continues, and results differ between conditions and between people. A good clinician will be open about that.
Questions to ask before treatment
- Is PRP a reasonable option for my specific condition?
- What other options should I consider?
- How many sessions are likely, and what will they cost?
- What are the risks for me, given my health history?
If you would like to talk through whether PRP fits your situation, book a consultation.
